Splash Around on Dog Swim Day

Happy Corgi runs through the bright blue water with his tongue sticking out.
Everything is better in the water

Why not indulge your pup in a little water fun to cool off? Dog swim days are days where local public pools close to people and open to pooches. It is usually only once or twice a year, and you may have to do a little searching, but they are out there. A lot of these events will include all kinds of fun and games, such as:

  • Pool fetch
  • Water tug
  • Keep away
  • Water Frisbee
  • Bobbing for treats

There may be a small fee associated with this type of event. It is usually to benefit a local animal shelter or rescue service.

...Or In a Kiddie or Doggie Pool

If you can’t find a local doggy swim day, or you want to enjoy it more than once or twice a year, just spring for a collapsible dog pool that doubles as a bathtub.

Your pooch can splash, swim, and flop around in the water until their heart is content, all from the privacy of your own home. And if you want to make it a social event, invite other dog parents that you know.

Hit the Open Trail

This isn’t just fun, it’s also a great way for you and your dog to stay fit together. They live for getting out in nature and sniffing and tracking all kinds of little critters! And while you are watching them have fun out in their ancestral stomping grounds, you’ll be getting exercise without even realizing it.

There are numerous wooded areas and trails in every type of region across the country. Just make sure you choose a pet-friendly one and bring along our Dog Cooling Vest (available for small and larger dogs).

There are all kinds of outdoor film nights offered all over the place, especially during the summer. This is also a great choice because they are usually done in the evening or after dark when the temps are cooling down.

Places like Chicago’s Grant Park, NYC’s Bryant Park, and several parks in the San Francisco Bay area all offer these types of activities. Not only that, but concerts in the park are also a great option.

All you need is a blanket, a few snacks (and treats), and make sure that you and your furbaby have plenty of water. Just be sure that they are pet-friendly events before you plan a whole day around it.

Additionally, there are several doggy-approved drive-in movie theaters across the country as well, including:

There are literally hundreds of more drive-ins available throughout the U.S. and Canada where the entire family, including the furry ones, can attend.

Enjoy the Dog Days of Summer at the Ballpark

August is known as the dog days of summer in baseball. With no other major sports leagues operating, all of the attention is on MLB. This is when they offer a number of promotions and other perks to bring people out to the games.

One of the most popular is their “Dog Days” where fans are welcomed to bring their 4-legged friends for a day of fun. There are usually a lot of per-friendly activities planned, and oftentimes you get to come down on the field after the game and catch a movie on the big screen.

Take a Road Trip

This is adventure isn't going to start itself, hop in!

Who says your summer fun has to be a 1-day event? You can pack up your pup and hit the open road to wherever you desire. You can head out somewhere with lots of open space where you can play in nature. Lakes, mountains, forests, and other regions are great locations for adventure.

But what if you want to just lie around and relax? Well, in that case, you can check out any number of pet-friendly hotels and vacation rentals. Who needs running and jumping when you can have room service and couples massages!?

Take Your Pup on a SUP Adventure

Ready to catch some waves?

What is SUP, you ask? Well, it's only one of the fastest-growing water sports around. Stand-up paddleboarding is gaining all kinds of attention and popularity wherever there is a body of water around. Dogs of all sizes and ages can enjoy this activity with their best friends.

Even dogs that aren’t particularly fond of the water sometimes take right to SUPing. However, you should consider using a doggie life-vest, even if they are adept in the water.

Host a Doggy Play Date for Your Friends and/or Neighbors

Dogs playing together outdoors in the summer grassy field.
Whoever said 3's a crowd, was wrong!

Surely you have family and friends with furbabies of their own. What about co-workers or neighbors? Not only is this a great way to get your dog to socialize with other dogs and people, but it is also a chance for you to make new friendships as well. It doesn't have to be a big event.

A few toys, a few treats, a spacious backyard and that’s all the little guys and gals need. You could turn it into a social gathering for the people as well by firing up the BBQ pit for some burgers and dogs.

It is also the perfect time to debut some of those funny dog clothes you’ve purchased at our dog boutique online.

Ruff It Out In Nature

Dogs camping and enjoying the summer in the Tennessee great outdoors.
Camp fun for the entire family

We mentioned hitting the open trail with your pooch earlier, but why does it have to be a one-day trip? A sleeping bag, food, and a few overnight supplies can turn it into a multi-day adventure.

For thousands of years, dogs slept outside under the stars with the sights, sounds, and smells of nature all around them. Let them enjoy a night like the wolf inside them wants to!

There are a number of pet-friendly camping chains like Jellystone Park and KOA that allow furry family members to tag along.

There are also numerous national forests and private campgrounds that let you bring your pets. Just be sure to go over the rules and regulations thoroughly before heading out.

Teach Your Pup a New Trick or Take a Class

Mixed Dog jumping in the air and catching a frisbee.
Throw it this way...I got it

Just because school is out doesn’t mean that your dog can’t learn new tricks. The weather is perfect for outdoor fun and that’s a great way to practice a little obedience training.

On top of that, with the extra free time you have from not having to chauffeur the kids around, you can sign your little furball up for classes if you want a more in-depth regiment. They can learn anything from simple, basic commands to more challenging skills

Just Show Up With Your Pup

Pick any dog-themed or dog-friendly activity in the summer to take your canine companion to. There are all kinds of festivals, shows, events, and other activities which were made for humans and his/her best friend to attend together. Just a few ideas of pet-friendly places include:

  • Surfing contests
  • Dog shows
  • Sporting events
  • Outdoor art festivals
  • Outdoor wine tastings
  • And many others

Another great benefit to these types of events, aside from getting to spend quality time with one of your favorite creatures on the planet, is that many times some or all of the proceeds go to support various humane societies and animal shelters in your community.

Mix Up Your Pup's Routine

Something as simple as walking them in a different neighborhood or taking them with you to the pet store can be a fun activity. There is no reason that you have to plan a big, all-day activity.

Trying a pet-friendly outdoor restaurant or going to visit a family member or friend they haven't seen in a while will brighten their day more than you could possibly imagine.

A Few Reminders

There are a ton of activities you can enjoy with your pooch not only during the summer but all year-round. However, when you’re out in the heat this time of year, it is important to remember a few things.

Just like people, dogs can overheat, get dehydrated, or even sunburned too. And unlike us, they can’t tell you when they feel this way. Nothing will ruin a day of fun and adventure with your furry friend than having them get sick or even have to go to the vet for getting too much sun and heat.

Make sure if you are participating in outdoor events or activities that your pooch has plenty of water, as well as dog-approved sunblock. And always make sure you have personalized dog collars with your pet's name and information, just in case you and your bestie get separated.
